2020 in Review

Updated: Apr 5, 2021

Interested in what we got up to in 2020? Well..the short answer is a lot!

2020 has been a turbulent year for us all, however we haven't let the pandemic stop us from reaching even more young people than ever before!

  • Reached over 1900 students nationally through #digitaloutreach efforts

  • Delivered our flagship Dr.eam conferences virtually as online events, with nearly 1000 students in live attendance across both events!

  • Provided virtual mock interviews to Year 13 students who attended our Dr.eam Senior Conference.

From the cancellation of work experiences, to changes in the format of admissions tests and the premature closure of schools, BWAMS has risen to every challenge!

Due to COVID-19, our face-to-face outreach activities had been cancelled indefinitely, including five outreach events scheduled across March and April 2020, which involved approximately 250 secondary school students. To address this issue, a groups of current BWAMS committee members launched a new widening access Instagram initiative on 18th March 2020: ‘We Are Medics’ which has grown exponentially to become the most popular Instagram accounts providing advice on the medicine admissions process.

In September, we adapted our Healthcare Careers School Programme, to ensure lessons could be delivered virtually in an engaging and interactive way. We recruited and trained almost 30 medical and dental students, to help deliver these sessions over the course of the year. We also organised virtual mock MMI interviews for over 50 students, providing verbal and written feedback to help students prepare for the new online format.

Looking to 2021, we are looking forward to running our very first Dr.eam Dentistry Conference, and expanding Dr.eam to Year 10s and Year 11s! We also have some exciting plans to launch structured support programme for current Year 12 students aspiring to study Medicine.

We are also continuing to deliver our Healthcare Careers Schools Programme virtually. If you would like us to make a virtual visit your school, college or sixth form, please email us at: uobwams@gmail.com.We run events for students from Year 7 to Year 13.
